How union hiring halls actually work
Unlike applying to an employer directly, a union hiring hall dispatches its own members to signatory employers as jobs come open. You typically need to already be a member (or be accepted as a Starter or apprentice) and get yourself onto an out-of-work or dispatch list -- the union usually does not automatically know when your job ends, so you have to register yourself and often check in periodically to stay active. Job assignments then go out roughly in order of registration, sometimes with priority tiers (own-local members first, then travel-card holders from other locals, then non-members), and dispatch can take several business days rather than being instant.
