Most oil sands workers on rotation live in a work camp near the site -- Suncor, Syncrude, CNRL, Imperial, and Cenovus all run or contract out camps in and around Fort McMurray, Fort MacKay, Anzac, and Conklin. Camps range from older dorm-style lodges to newer camps with private rooms and ensuite bathrooms. Wapasu Creek Lodge, run by Civeo north of Fort McMurray, is one of the better-known camps and is where the nickname "Wapatraz" comes from among workers.
Rooms and facilities
Expect a private or semi-private room, a shared or ensuite bathroom depending on the camp, a cafeteria (camp food quality varies a lot camp to camp and is a constant topic of conversation), a gym, and a rec room with TVs and sometimes a games area. Newer camps tend to have better rooms and gyms; older camps can feel more institutional. Downtime and recreation
Off-shift time is mostly the gym, the rec room, video games, movies, and phone calls home. Some camps run organized activities or have a small store. Weather and remote locations mean most downtime happens inside camp rather than in town, especially during a 14/7 or 21/7 rotation.
Camp rules
Every camp has a code of conduct: no alcohol or drugs, quiet hours, restrictions on visitors, and rules around company equipment and networks. Camp WiFi and devices are for personal use off-shift only -- company networks and equipment are never for personal browsing or gambling, on shift or off.
