Mining union locals: who represents which mine
Sudbury alone has two different unions at its two big operators. Here's who represents whom, roughly how dispatch works, and where to go for anything official.

Why Sudbury has two different unions at two different mines
This trips a lot of people up: Vale and Glencore run separate major operations in the same city, and each is represented by a different union. USW Local 6500 represents Vale's Sudbury workforce -- over 2,600 members across mining, milling, smelting and refining. Unifor Local 598 represents Glencore's Sudbury Integrated Nickel Operations -- roughly 800 members across Fraser Mine, Nickel Rim South, the Strathcona Mill and the Sudbury Smelter. Applying to "a mine in Sudbury" without knowing which operator you mean also means not knowing which union, if either, would represent you.
Timmins: a name that may not match the current owner
USW Local 7580 represented the Timmins Porcupine complex under its previous owner, Newmont. That complex sold to Discovery Silver, now operating as Discovery Mining Ltd., in a sale that closed 16 April 2025 (see /mining-towns/ for the full ownership history). We could not confirm from a primary source whether Local 7580's representation carried over to the new owner -- treat that as an open question and confirm directly before assuming either way.
IUOE Local 793: a dispatch model, not a single-employer local
Local 793 works differently from a single-mine local like the two above. It's a much larger union -- more than 17,000 members across Ontario and Nunavut -- covering heavy equipment and crane operators and related mining/industrial trades, and it runs its own dispatch system for temporary positions rather than representing one fixed employer. Its own postings have included work at Baffinland's Mary River mine site in Nunavut, and it runs training campuses in Oakville and Morrisburg. If you're a heavy equipment operator rather than a production miner, this is often the more relevant union to look at.
Building trades: construction and major maintenance, not production
Mine sites also need electricians, pipefitters, and other building trades for construction projects and major maintenance shutdowns -- work that's typically separate from the production workforce represented by USW or Unifor. In the Sudbury/Timmins region that work runs through the Northeastern Ontario Building and Construction Trades Council, which coordinates the individual building trades unions rather than bargaining as a single unit itself.
How dispatch and hiring actually work, in general terms
For a single-employer local like USW 6500 or Unifor 598, you typically apply to the employer directly and become a union member once hired, since the union represents that employer's existing workforce. For a dispatch-model union like IUOE 793, it works more like a trade hiring hall: you join, and the union dispatches members to temporary positions as they come up, rather than you applying to one fixed employer. The exact process, wait times, and requirements to get on a dispatch list are things only the union itself can tell you accurately -- go to its own site rather than relying on a summary here.
Compiled list of locals
The artifact for this cluster: every local we could source for Ontario hard-rock mining, with official links and dispatch notes, in one place.
| Local | Represents | Members | Dispatch / notes | Official site |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| USW Local 6500 | Vale's Sudbury operations (mining, milling, smelting, refining production and maintenance) | Over 2,600 members in the Sudbury area | Full-time reps at the union hall handle grievances, health & safety, WSIB, benefits and pensions. | Official site |
| Unifor Local 598 | Glencore's Sudbury Integrated Nickel Operations (Fraser Mine, Nickel Rim South, Strathcona Mill, Sudbury Smelter) | Approximately 800 Unifor members | Represents the Sudbury basin's second major operator, separate from Vale/USW 6500. | Official site |
| USW Local 7580 | The Timmins Porcupine gold complex | About 250 members (reported under the previous owner, Newmont) | Unconfirmed: this local's collective agreement was reported under Newmont before the Porcupine complex sold to Discovery Silver / Discovery Mining Ltd. (sale closed 16 April 2025 -- see /mining-towns/). We could not confirm from a primary source whether Local 7580 still represents the workforce under the new owner. Confirm directly with USW or Discovery Mining before relying on this. | Official site |
| IUOE Local 793 | Heavy equipment and crane operators, and mining/industrial trades (including ore haul truck drivers and heavy truck mechanics), across Ontario and Nunavut | More than 17,000 members | Runs a dispatch system for temporary positions (its own postings have included Baffinland's Mary River mine site in Nunavut) plus training campuses in Oakville and Morrisburg. Not exclusively a mining local -- also covers construction and industrial sectors. | Official site |
| Northeastern Ontario Building and Construction Trades Council | Coordinates the building trades unions (electrical, plumbing/pipefitting, and related trades) working on construction and major maintenance projects at mine sites in the Sudbury/Timmins region | Member count not published on the source checked | Office at 469 Bouchard Street, Suite 222, Sudbury. A council, not a single local -- it represents multiple building trades unions rather than one bargaining unit. | Official site |

Frequently asked questions
What union represents Vale workers in Sudbury?
USW (United Steelworkers) Local 6500, with over 2,600 members in the Sudbury area covering production and maintenance roles in mining, milling, smelting and refining. Its own site is uswlocals.org/usw-local-6500 (checked 2026-09-07).
What union represents Glencore workers in Sudbury?
Unifor Local 598, representing approximately 800 members at Glencore's Sudbury Integrated Nickel Operations -- Fraser Mine, Nickel Rim South, the Strathcona Mill and the Sudbury Smelter. This is a different union than the one representing Vale's workforce a few kilometres away, which surprises some people applying across both operators.
Is the Timmins Porcupine complex still represented by USW Local 7580?
We could not confirm this. USW Local 7580's collective agreement was reported under the previous owner, Newmont, before the complex sold to Discovery Silver / Discovery Mining Ltd. in April 2025. Whether the local still represents the workforce under the new owner is something we're flagging as unconfirmed rather than assuming -- confirm directly with USW Canada or Discovery Mining.
How does IUOE Local 793 dispatch work?
Local 793 runs its own dispatch system, filling temporary positions for heavy equipment and crane operators and related mining/industrial trades -- its own postings have included work at Baffinland's Mary River mine site in Nunavut. It also runs training campuses in Oakville and Morrisburg. For current openings and how to get on a dispatch list, go directly to iuoelocal793.org rather than a third-party job board.
