Ice road trucking jobs: roles, employers, and how hiring works
Winter roads run on a mix of trucking, road-building, and camp-support roles. Here's who does what, and what it actually takes to get hired.

The roads and who runs them
The Tibbitt to Contwoyto Winter Road (roughly 400 km, the longest heavy-haul ice road in North America) supplies the diamond mines north of Yellowknife -- Ekati, Diavik, and Gahcho Kué -- and is built and operated by a joint-venture road authority contracted by the mine owners. The Dettah Ice Road crosses Great Slave Lake near Yellowknife. The Manitoba Winter Road System (roughly 2,400 km) and Ontario's James Bay Winter Road connect northern communities that have no year-round highway access, and are typically run by provincial transportation ministries or First Nations road authorities with contracted trucking companies hauling freight over them.
Common roles
Truckers haul fuel, freight, and equipment once a road is open and rated for load. Ice engineers and ice profilers (using ground-penetrating radar, or GPR) measure and certify ice thickness before any load limit is set or raised. Snowcat and grader operators build and maintain the road surface. Flooding crews add water to thicken ice faster than nature alone. Camp staff, dispatch, and safety officers keep the whole operation running and workers safe in extreme cold (see /pay/ for what these roles typically pay).
How hiring actually works
Trucking companies contracted to haul on a given winter road post seasonal driver positions, usually starting in December for a season that runs January through March. Entry-level and support roles -- camp staff, flaggers, general labour -- are the easiest way in with no ice-road experience; some carriers will also train drivers on smaller trucks before assigning loaded runs on the ice itself. A Class 1 or Class 3 licence with a clean abstract matters more than prior ice-road experience for driving roles.
What you need before applying
Expect to need a valid commercial licence (Class 1 or 3 depending on the role), a clean driving abstract, and standard safety certifications for northern/remote work sites. Some mine-site transport contracts also require site-specific orientation and drug testing before you're allowed on company property. See our tickets and certifications guide for exactly what gates a driving role -- Class 1, the air brake endorsement, TDG, and the winter-road orientation on top of it -- with cost and validity sourced by province.

Frequently asked questions
What roles are on an ice road crew?
Truckers, ice engineers, ice profilers (ground-penetrating radar techs), snowcat and grader operators, flooding crews, camp staff, dispatch, and safety officers all work together to build, maintain, and run a winter road.
Do I need a specific licence?
A Class 1 (tractor-trailer) or Class 3 licence is standard for driving roles, plus a clean driving abstract. Non-driving roles like camp staff, flaggers, and general labour typically don't require a trucking licence at all.
When is hiring busiest?
Hiring ramps up in the weeks before the season opens (typically December-January) as carriers and mine sites staff up for the Jan-Mar window (2025 estimate, unconfirmed) -- see our season timing guide for how opening dates are decided.
